What is measured here — and what is not
Round 1: 432 against 440 Hz
31.8 cents apart — just under a third of a semitone. The threshold at which people tell two pitches apart in direct comparison is around 3 to 12 cents. Almost everyone passes this round, and that is not imagination but physics.
Round 2: 432 against 433 Hz
4.0 cents — at the threshold. This round answers the real question: does the number 432 have a sound of its own, or do you only hear that something is lower? Anyone who experiences 432 as special ought to be able to tell it from 433.
Why the test is clean
Both excerpts run through the same signal core — the 440 one too, at factor 1.0. Otherwise you would hear the processing instead of the pitch, and that would be the real giveaway.
The loudness difference is measured and comes to 0.03 dB between 432 and 440, and 0.01 dB between 432 and 433. That is far below anything a person hears — so there is nothing to give it away but the pitch itself. Loudness is the commonest quiet cheat in listening tests: people take the louder one for the better one.
The order is shuffled anew for every trial, and the scoring says what small numbers are worth: five out of five by pure guessing happens 3.1 % of the time, four out of five or better 18.8 %.
What a result does not prove
Five trials are five trials. Anyone who gets them all in round 2 may have a very fine ear — or may have been lucky. And anyone who misses does not therefore hear badly: 4 cents is too little for almost everyone. The test says something about this afternoon, not about you.
And it says nothing about which one you prefer. That is a different question, it is a matter of taste, and only you can answer it.
