What does “concert pitch A” mean?
Concert pitch is the reference tone a piece is tuned to — given as the frequency of the A above middle C. 440 Hz is the usual value today, set in 1955 by the standard ISO 16. Anyone listening at 432 Hz has their material tuned about 1.8 per cent lower: 31.8 cents, just under a third of a semitone.
Why isn’t my music on 440 Hz?
Because almost no recording sits exactly there. Orchestras today often tune to 442 or 443 Hz, historical performance practice to 415, older tapes have changed speed over decades, and digitising either corrects for it or does not. The 440 are a standard, not a law of nature.
How accurate is the measurement?
On pure tones from 432 to 445 Hz the error stays below 0.2 cents, on real music below 1 cent — checked against recordings we detuned on purpose, so the truth was known. A cent is one hundredth of a semitone; people tell apart five to ten at best.
The maths works on the peaks in the frequency spectrum: every tone is asked how far it sits from the nearest equal-tempered step, and all of them together give a circular mean — circular, because +49 and −51 cents are the same tuning. It is the same method the IYAMBAE Tuner uses to estimate the source pitch.
What can this measurement not do?
It only identifies the tuning to within a semitone. Baroque pitch 415.3 Hz sits exactly one semitone below 440 — to the maths both look the same, and it reports 440. That is not a weakness of the method but lies in the matter itself: a semitone lower is the same tuning, just a different key. Anyone measuring historical recordings has to keep that in mind.
And it needs tones. With pure percussion, speech or noise the readings cancel each other out — then the page reports a low confidence instead of an invented number.
What does the confidence percentage mean?
It says how much the samples from the piece agree. We measure at up to 24 places spread across the whole piece and compare them. From 35 per cent the estimate counts as sound — with clean musical material it is usually above 90. If it falls below, the page says so explicitly.
Which files can I measure?
Anything your browser can play: MP3, M4A/AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG, Opus. The soundtrack of a video too, if you drop the video file in. Very long files take a moment — the measuring is still spread across the whole piece, not just the beginning.
